A new book out on the market is called Invisible Chains: Canada's Underground World of Human Trafficking. The book is available through Chapters.ca and Amazon.ca. The book is written by Benjamin Perrin, an assistant professor at UofBC Faculty of Law and a leading expert in human trafficking. The book launch will take place in Calgary on October 22 and in Edmonton on October 23, 2010. Tickets are free, but you must register through the website <http://invisiblechains-calgary.eventbrite.com> or <http://invisiblechains-edmonton.eventbrite.com>. The books are only $20 and would probably give us a lot of insight into the problem in this country.

The RCMP has a video and brochures available entitled “Not for Sale.” Just call your local detachment or go onto their website for the order the information. They are doing a lot of work in this field.

The CWL provincial council had undertaken a new initiative, called “Nickels for the North.” We urge each council to start a collection jar for this initiative. It is for the northern CWL members to travel to CWL meetings and conventions. Just have your treasurer collect the money and send a cheque to the Provincial Treasurer. The monies can be sent anytime.

I urge each Council President to register via <euthanasiprevention@on.aibn.com> to receive the very informative newsletter of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.

I also would like to recommend that we help people in the Third World countries by buying Fair Trade products. You can buy “Camino” chocolate in different flavors available at Safeway and Superstore. Fair Trade coffee is also available at these stores as well as at Costco. This is very easy to do, so that we can provide other people a better life.

Please remember to collect 1% donations at your meetings for Development and Peace.

May God Bless You All.

Community Life Standing Committee Chair

September 2010  CWL ABMK Community Life article for Fall Newsletter

A new book that will be on the market is called Invisible Chains: Canada's Underground World of Human Trafficking. The author, Benjamin Perrin, is an assistant professor at the UBC faculty of law and a leading expert in human trafficking. It will be available for sale at a book launch in Calgary on October 22, 2010 and in Edmonton on October 23, 2010. To register to attend this free launch, [see the web links in the Report, below].

I ordered the book from amazon.com. [Also available from <www.chapters.indigo.ca>.] It will be shipped on October 12, 2010. The books are $20.06 each. Each diocese should consider this book for their Community Life standing committee chairperson, as it is a very informative and enlightening about the human trafficking occurring here in our cities.

Another important issue that we must be diligent about being informed and letter writing is the euthanasia debate. Each council and parish should register for the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition <www.epcc.ca> newsletter. The email address to register is euthanasiaprevention@on.aibn.com. There is much work needed to get Government to understand the severity of euthanasia for our country and families.

May 2010  CWL ABMK Community Life Oral Report for Convention 2010

Madam President:

I would like to thank all the members for their great works that I read about in your annual reports.

We have not any feedback on how successful our letter writing campaign on the Human Trafficking went, but I know that our Government was more aware of the problem that could exist at the Olympics.

I encourage every Council to work on the resolution <2009.01> “Exit Strategies for Prostituted Persons”  that pertains to Community Life that was passed at National Convention 2009.

We must continue to support and help all our refugee families financially and spiritually.

On my table I have several copies of a report a student at St. Joseph’s College in Edmonton wrote about her Field Experience in Ghana.
Her message is: Teach us to share with others at home and abroad, the good things You have given us, like we pray, in our League Prayer. This calls us all to act as global citizens in an endeavour toward social justice for all God’s people.

My challenge for all Councils is to increase the awareness of our 1% donations at all meetings, which helps all third world countries. We are able to help in the Haiti disaster by donating to Development and Peace. Brochures for 1% are available on my table <www.cwl.ca/CDN League/winter2006/Voluntary.pdf>.

In From the Margins: A Call to Action on Poverty, Housing and Homelessness is a report presented by Senator Eggleton, which will be read at the next sitting of the Senate. I have copies of the executive report on my table. This is an important issue for all of us.

The Pope’s message on World Day of Peace 2010: If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation.

This concludes my report.

Some members attended presentations on Euthanasia and Family Support Centre. Also participated in National Addiction Awareness Week by walking and preparing lunch.

Councils have raised funds for Pennies for the poor, special collection during Lent, donate to 1% Program and by holding a hunger supper. Other ways money was raised was by selling calendars and catering. Other councils donated to Inuit in Labrador (sweaters & warm clothing), Canadian Outreach for Ethiopia, Save a Family Plan and overseas plans to Foster Children in Third World countries.

November 25, 2009  CWL ABMK Provincial Community Life Standing Committee Communique #1

To: Diocesan Community Life Chairpersons
      Provincial Executive (for information)
From: Provincial Community Life Chairperson

Greetings
My name is Yvette F. and I am the new Provincial Chairperson for Community & Christian Family Life. I was pleased to accept the appointment last week.
I have been a CWL member for 25 years and have served on the executive at parish level twice and as diocesan treasurer for two terms.

African Realities
After hearing of the reality of not having cleaning materials and staff in hospitals in Africa, we need to give thanks for our Health Care system in Canada. We also need to be thankful for the universal education systems in place in our country.

We need to be diligent in supporting the 1% program for Development and Peace (Cat#205). It is our donations that help support social justice programs that try to change attitudes and get to the root of social inequities in developing countries. We need to pray very hard for the people who work there as well.

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace (CCODP) fall action campaign needs our support. Remind your councils to donate and consider signing postcards that will be distributed at our parishes.

Call to Action on Accountability for Mining Corporations
Two Bills are currently before the government on the mining issue: Bill C-300 An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries which has passed second reading in the House of Commons and has been sent to Foreign Affairs Committee for review. Bill C-298 An Act respecting Corporate Social Responsibility for the Activities of Canadian Mining Corporations in Developing Countries has received first reading. Please encourage your councils to do letter writing to the MPs. To get your specific MP address, go to www.parl.gc.ca.

Human Trafficking
The Resolution 2009.01- Exit strategies for Prostituted Persons - was passed at National Convention. We ask that your councils study this resolution and take the suggested action plan of letter writing to MPs.

Bill S-223 - An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and to enact certain other measures in order to provide assistance and protection to victims of human trafficking. This Bill has passed second reading in the Senate and has been sent to Human Rights Committee.

Bill C-268 to amend the Criminal Code (minimum sentence for offences involving trafficking of persons under the age of eighteen years) has passed third reading in House of Commons and first reading in Senate.

Consider writing to members of parliament and government committee members in support of these bills. Please provide your MP's name and address.

The books “The Natashas: Inside the New Global Sex Trade” and “The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It” by author Victor Malarek are about human trafficking. Victor was in Edmonton on October 18, 2009 to speak on this subject. Continue the letter writing on this subject. We are being heard.

Review and Support for Past Resolutions
Please refer to past resolutions that can be used for council meeting topics.

Thanks for your continued service to the League members through our Community Life Standing Committee.

Your Sister in the League,
Yvette F.,
Provincial Chairperson of Community Life
